National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2022 is Canada's second National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, a statutory holiday to honour survivors, their families and communities, and to ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. Since 2013, September 30 has been observed as Orange Shirt Day to recognize the colonial legacy of residential schools, named for the experience of survivor Phyllis Webstad, who at the age of six was stripped of her new orange shirt on her first day attending the St. Joseph Mission Residential School. The Orange shirt symbolizes how the residential school system stripped away the Indigenous identities of its students.
